Best things to see in Brisbane that shouldn’t be missed

August 16, 2017 By itravelnet.com

Brisbane may be one of the most populous cities in Australia and a metropolitan hub, but there is more to Brisbane than meets the eye. As a part of the older cities in Australia, Brisbane was founded upon the ancient homelands of the indigenous peoples. So if you want to get a feel of old time nostalgia, here are a few places you can visit in Brisbane:

The Story Bridge

The Story Bridge has been an icon for over 70 years, since it was opened in 1940. It is, 100% Queensland made, as all resources required to build it were sourced locally. It can get to be quite congested during peak-hours so choose your time wisely.

The Story Bridge

The best way to experience it is by bike. Start off at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, ride across the bridge, and head towards New Farm Park. When you are ready for a bite, head towards Factory51 Function Venue, nestled in the inner-city of Coorparoo. The red brick warehouse and grounds have been carefully restored as a Bistro, and Bar, of outstanding rustic character. The Laneway bistro serves up share plates and casual lunches until 5pm then offers an extensive range of chargrilled meats and traditional wood fire pizzas. The cocktail bar offers 10 local craft beers on tap and a generous list of boutique wines by the glass.

The Old Government House

The Old Government House

The Old Government House served as the hub of colonial life in the early days of Brisbane. It housed eleven governors and their families for almost 50 years. It now serves as a historic house museum, and has a gallery housing the works of renowned Australian artist William Robinson.

Commissariat Store, Brisbane

Commissariat Store

The Commissariat Store is Queensland’s oldest habitable, and a significant heritage building. Originally  built as a storehouse for the convict settlement, it now houses the Commissariat Store Museum, which is operated by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. The lower two floors were originally built for the convicts. The third floor was added in 1913. It is now the main entrance from William Street.

The ground floor displays handcrafted, detailed models of buildings from the early Colony of Brisbane. These models are arranged in a street layout.

The top floor has rotating exhibitions that showcase the colorful history of Queensland. The middle floor also has exhibition cabinets that explore the colonial period in Queensland’s history. On this floor you’ll find the infamous ‘Convict Finger’.

Old Windmill Observatory: The Tower Mill

Old Windmill Observatory: The Tower Mill

Part of the Heritage Register, the Windmill tower was constructed in 1828 to process wheat and corn. In 1855 the tower was reused as a signal station to communicate shipping news. It is the oldest of its type left standing in Australia and further distinguished by having been built by convict labour.

August 15, 2017 By itravelnet.com

Singapore Should be Your Next Family Holiday

Planning for a family holiday isn’t so easy. There are lots of things to consider, and you must also take fun aspects into consideration as it involves your kids. We at One Visa have performed the research and discovered why Singapore would be the best place for your next family holiday. Thus, we present the reasons why this place should be the destination you choose. Know all of them here.

Weather:

You’ll find that Singapore has awesome weather, especially if you are from Western countries. Here, you don’t have to worry about icy mornings or chilly afternoons. This city will be warm all year round. Since it is placed perfectly on the equator, the city experiences a tropical climate all the time and hence, you can strike out the coats and beanies from your packing check list.

Affordability:

Whenever you speak about cost factors in Singapore, you will receive a bad rap. But, in terms of tourism, Singapore is comparatively affordable. The public transportation is really cheap when you get a Tourist pass. On an average day, you will only spend around $10 per head for public transport, and more importantly, most of the tourist attractions are free to enter.

Accommodations:

Singapore has lots of family- and kid-friendly accommodation options that are not highly expensive. Most of the hotels will have a pool and restaurants. The deluxe rooms in these hotels would start at just $280 USD per night. Some of the best options will be:

§ The York Hotel
§ Clarke Quay
§ Bugis
§ Fort Canning
§ Resort World

Food:

Singapore is full of food spots, and people from any part of the world can find their favorite cuisine here. We hear from expats that they are constantly surrounded by good food while they are in Singapore and that’s not exaggerating. Especially, if you are from an Asian country, you can find a lot of delicious stuff, and you know what? You will get a complete feast for just $3 (and up) per dish.

Modern and Clean:

While most of the Asian countries are said to lack modern comforts, Singapore is exceptional. Here, you can find almost all the modern amenities that you enjoy in western countries. Also, the city is incredibly clean and organized. You need not feel afraid of anything in this diverse city.

Tourist Attractions:

The city is fully loaded with tourist attractions, and there is so much fun waiting for the kids. Firstly, visit Universal Studios where there are rides and a giant spinning globe to see and enjoy. Secondly, the Kidzania is a world-renowned edutainment center. This is a must-visit attraction for your kids. Next is the zoo, which is incredibly big with lots of animal species to see. Don’t forget to have your “Jungle Breakfast” here. Next is Sentosa Island – the ultimate family destination. This is a sandy island resort with lots of activities. Finally, you must also visit the Gardens by the Bay with amazing vertical tree gardens.

Aren’t these reasons enough for planning your next family holiday in Singapore?

The United Kingdom offers different type of destinations: some more linked to an historical background, others seem to be perfect for a romantic getaway and others just need to be explored as an adventure with trekking paths and excursions all over open fields, cliffs and an astonishing countryside.

Exploring the UK on the road will give you the chance to see several places in just one trip even if this project may sounds a little bit ambitious, with some easy-to-follow tips you will have everything settled down for an amazing experience.

Make a plan

If improvisation is the most beautiful part of a trip, following the instinct and the heart in a direction rather than another, having a basic route to follow we strongly suggest you: get an idea of what you would like to see and what you absolutely do not want to miss and build an itinerary around it! Once you have this preliminary itinerary all done check out holidayautos.co.uk to find cheap deals to hire a car to explore the UK in an independent, free and unique way. Hiring a car is perfect to explore the most hidden not so touristic destinations, especially the countryside and the coastal areas travelling at your own pace and deciding your next stop stress-free!

Take your time

It is true that when we travel we would like to see everything, but we think sometimes it is better slow things a little bit and just enjoy the ride: England is full of picturesque villages, enchanting places, historical sites and more. Take time for each stop, not to visit it, but try to enjoy the atmosphere of the place, live it, enjoy an ale in a pub and contemplate the views!

Use a map!

When you arrive in a new country or city it will be very convenient to have the maps to be consulted to get directions and realize the distance and where you are. You can use an old-fashioned paper map or use your smartphone. If you are out in the outskirts and you don’t like getting too digital during your trip, the tourist information centers are always very nice and helpful!

These are our main tips to help you exploring this enchanting country in the right way, visiting several places and making the most of this experience.

You Can Do Your Part For The Environment when you travel

August 15, 2017 By itravelnet.com

You Can Do Your Part For The Environment when you travel

The fight to protect our environment is closer to the forefront of our societal focus than ever before. Throughout the summer we’ve seen numerous reactions to Donald Trump pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords – most of them centered on the idea of meeting environmental protection goals despite political maneuvering. Just recently, we saw Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveil his economy line of smart, electric cars, meant to further the transition away from high pollution gas vehicles. And in August, Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power will be widely released as a follow-up to his infamous climate change film An Inconvenient Truth.

Those are all big events generating tons of headlines, and they demonstrate that, slowly but surely, our society is beginning to concentrate on the daunting challenges of climate change. But they’re also big developments. The responses to the Paris Climate Accords news have involved state governors and private companies doubling down on eco-friendly efforts; Tesla’s big unveiling has yet to trickle down to consumer acquisition of the vehicles in a significant way; and Gore primarily focuses on big, sweeping developments and the need for change. It’s clear that the focus is shifting in favor of recognizing and appreciating the challenges we face to protect our world – but it’s not always as clear what you can do about it.

As with any major cause, the first step is paying attention. Being aware of developments like the ones discussed above helps, and any more you can do to educate yourself or others is a positive step. But there are also more direct, practical ways to affect change in your own little corner of the world.

Here are a few ways to do your part in your day-to-day life.

Recycle More Thoroughly

Most of us try to recycle regularly, and it’s easy enough to dispose of the basics. Plastic containers, glass bottles, and paper grocery bags, for instance, are usually tossed right into the recycling bin. But even some people who consider themselves to be environmentally conscious don’t quite realize the full extent to which they can responsibly dispose of waste. Take the time to look up waste management rules in your area to see what you might be able to recycle that you weren’t aware of. Chances are in one way or another you can cut back on trash and increase your recycling output.

Buy Green Products

Recycling what you can is always nice. But you may be surprised to know that you can also control your home’s waste output simply by buying green products. That can mean a lot of different things, but here we’re talking about day-to-day items, from drink containers to plates and utensils. Eco-friendly companies have designed these kinds of products so that they’re completely biodegradable, which means that even if you do ultimately dispose of them in your trash, they don’t stand to do any harm.

Switch Your Light Bulbs

It’s no secret that there have been a lot of “smarter” and more energy-efficient light bulbs put out in the last several years. Numerous companies have started to manufacture these bulbs, and in some cases they can last significantly longer than ordinary bulbs. The energy saved from switching your home over to energy-efficient bulbs is actually quite significant, and helps contribute to a cleaner environment.

Cut Back On Meat

This may sound more like a personal decision that one meant to better the environment. However, you may not realize just how much work goes into raising livestock that ultimately supply stores and restaurants with meat. Through the entire process of raising livestock and producing meat, a lot of waste is generated and significant carbon emissions occur. By cutting back on meat even a little bit, you can do your part toward lessening this industry’s impact on the world.

Buy Your Next Vehicle Responsibly

A lot of people are eyeing the transition to electric cars, and there will be even more options to suit this preference in the years ahead. Even now, however, with ordinary cars, you can be responsible in making decisions. You can search for vehicles online with ease these days, and in doing so you can usually filter a search for an eco-friendly vehicle, or in some cases even a partially electric one. Make this part of the process if and when you’re looking for a new car; consider environmental impact right after safety and comfort.

Walk (Or Bike) More Frequently

Even if you wind up with a car that has a minimal footprint, so to speak, you’re still doing even better for the environment if you don’t drive at all! Now, unless you live in a small town or a big city with public transportation, it’s probably difficult to spend a day without using your car. But as with cutting back on meat, even a small change can make a difference. Consider walking or biking along a reasonable route that you ordinarily use your car for.

These are all fairly small steps in terms of how they affect your daily life. But all together they make for a significant positive step toward contributing to climate preservation.

The Pros And Cons Of Streaming TV While Traveling

August 12, 2017 By itravelnet.com

The Pros And Cons Of Streaming TV While Traveling

Traveling is a time for exploration and adventure. There’s always more to see and do, and as long as you’re on the lookout, you’ll never get bored. Which is why some people find it strange that others like to watch TV while traveling. I’m not talking about simply turning on the hotel TV at night. Some prefer to stream their favorite shows over the hotel Wi-Fi, if they can’t get it on broadcast television.

You might be looking for the best VPN for iPad if you’re going somewhere overseas. Other countries won’t necessarily have what you love to watch.

But why stream in the first place? Here are some of the pros and cons of streaming TV while traveling.

Pro

You have something to do in your hotel at night. Yes, there’s a lot to do outside your hotel, but once you’ve settled down for the night, a small hotel room can get very boring.

Con

It might prevent you from more exploration. Sometimes you might think you’ve done enough for the day. But if the inside of your hotel room makes you want to scream, you’ll go find something you never knew you were looking for. Maybe a party happening somewhere, or even just a quiet coffee shop in a beautiful part of town.

Pro

Watching TV is a nice way to wind down after a day of hiking or touring. You’ve come back to your hotel room exhausted and ready for bed, but it’s hard to go straight from the wonderful new experiences to sleep.

Con

If you get too caught up in a series, you might not get the rest you need. Instead, you’ll stay up later than you intended, and be too tired to appreciate the following day of your travels.

Pro

There’s a relatively good chance you’ll get sick on a long trip. We tend to spend the first days of our travels non-stop, making sure we see and do everything, packing every day with experiences. After a few days, you might end up feeling both burnt out and sick. If you need some time to recover, you’ll want something to do. And keeping up with your favorite series is a good way to go.

Con

You might “give up” too easily. Are you sick or are you just tired? If you’re just tired, maybe you’ll appreciate keeping going anyway. After all, if you slow down you might lose momentum. However, if a screen is drawing you to the hotel room, it can seem a much more comfortable option than just carrying on.

Pro

You won’t have to hide from the internet. If you’re not up to date with the latest episode of Game Of Thrones, the internet can be your worst enemy. Every status update about how “shook” someone is, or Buzzfeed articles telling you in the headline that “someone” died. It’s one big minefield.

Con

Maybe you could do with a little more investment in a TV show. Traveling is a time to explore a new you, disconnected from the life you’re so comfortable in and used to. You find out that what was so important to you at home is not actually that big a deal. The same can happen with the series that’s such a huge priority. Take a break from it. Don’t panic over spoilers. And see if your life is actually any less interesting!

Things to See and Do in Boston

August 11, 2017 By itravelnet.com

There are very few cities in America that hold as much history as Boston. The city has numerous historical sites that can keep you occupied and entertained throughout your visit. Boston is also a joy to navigate on foot since most of the sights are located relatively close to each other. Below are some of the city’s most popular attractions.

Freedom Trail

Boston

The Freedom Trail is definitely one of Boston’s top attractions. The 3-mile trail takes you from Boston Common to Bunker Hill and through 16 of the city’s most important monuments. Despite the relatively long distance of the trail, you can’t get lost if you follow the red line on the sidewalks and the footprints at the street crossings. Tourists can also get travel brochures at the Boston Common visitor center to guide them along the trail.

Highlights of the trail include the Old Granary Burying Ground, where founding fathers such as Paul Revere are buried; the Old South Meeting House; the Old State House, which is the oldest public building in Boston; and the site of the Boston massacre. You’ll also get to see Paul Revere’s house and the Old North Church, where strategically placed lanterns warned that the British were coming.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Popularly known as the Cradle of Liberty, Faneuil Hall is located in downtown Boston. Built in 1742 by Peter Faneuil, the hall was given to the city of Boston on condition that it would always remain open to the public. To this date, the ground floor still houses stalls, while the upper floors house the council chamber where revolutionaries once met. The fourth floor is home to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Museum. You can get a bite to eat or shop for souvenirs in the numerous restaurants and shops.

Cambridge

Located across the Charles River, Cambridge is home to two of the top universities in the world: MIT and Harvard. Here you can see amazing architecture and an unbelievable range of restaurants and shops. You can stroll by Harvard Yard, which was featured in “Good Will Hunting,” and you can take in all the history on offer, like Tory Row, where a famed King George loyalist once lived. You can also visit Longfellow House, the former headquarters of George Washington during the Siege of Boston. Cambridge also makes a good place to stay with easy access to Boston.

Fenway Park

Fondly known as America’s best baseball park, Fenway Park is one of America’s most iconic sports arenas and home to the beloved Boston Red Sox. Opened in 1912, the stadium has remained remarkably similar over more than a century, making it an interesting place to visit, even for non-fans. One of the stadium’s biggest attractions is the Green Monster, the large, green left field wall. Join one of the 50-minute stadium tours held every day, and then have a bite to eat or a drink at The Bleacher Bar, right under the bleachers.

Copley Square

Copley Square is the largest square in the Back Bay Area and is surrounded by a mix of historical and modern buildings. One of the better known iconic spots is Trinity Church, which features unbelievable murals, frescoes, and stained glass. Across the square is the Boston Public Library, which is America’s first public library. You can also find the finish line of the Boston Marathon down the block on Boylston Street.

Boston Harbor

Boston Harbor is made up of a mix of residential and commercial buildings connected by the waterfront Harbor Walk. The harbor features many parks and cafés, and you can explore it by water taxi or boat. Since the port is quite big, you should start your visit at the north end of the harbor near the Institute of Contemporary Art. You can also visit a replica of the Boston Tea Party ship, where you may be able to catch a re-enactment of the historic event.

New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium beautifully overlooks Boston’s waterfront. It’s home to over 20,000 fish and an artificial coral reef that houses tropical fish and sharks. The aquarium also has a tank where guests can touch small sea creatures, such as crabs and starfish. Another major attraction at the aquarium is a live performance by harbor seals.

Boston has many things to do beyond its Revolutionary War sights. Visit Boston to experience the city for yourself.

Traveling tots and teens – Why you should travel with kids

August 10, 2017 By itravelnet.com

Traveling tots and teens - Why you should travel with kids

Most people try to travel the world before they have kids or wish they had, or resign themselves to hoping their retirement package will stretch to cover a cruise once the kids have all left home. But there are a lot of reasons to travel with your kids. Here are just a few.

Language

The younger children are when they are exposed to other languages, the more likely they are to retain the ability to learn them and are more likely to take an interest. It’s one thing playing a CD of Spanish or Chinese in the car on the way to Kindergarten, but hearing a language spoken in its own country is a completely immersive experience. Experiencing the culture while hearing the language will have a far greater impact on your little ones.

Culture

Being an outsider in a foreign culture can be jarring even for adults, but it has its upside. Children who grow up aware of other peoples, places, cultures, and traditions are far more accepting than their peers. A teenager who has traveled as a youngster will be much more open to new people and experiences.
The importance of knowing that our version of ‘normal’, be it food, language or clothing, is just as strange to some people as theirs may seem to us.

Shared experience

Shared experiences make for great family bonding time. Travel makes for great family experiences, far more memorable, and often more exciting than time spent on home soil. Whatever age they are now, or were when you traveled, look back at the pictures and reminisce together, it will bring back great memories, and you’ll probably get a good few laughs too.

General knowledge

Well-travelled kids have a far greater general knowledge base than other children. This may be in part from things they pick up along the way on tours, museum visits etc, but more likely, they are simply interested. Children who don’t travel are quite happy in their comfort zone, sticking to what they know. Children who travel are aware of the wider world; they are far more curious, and more inclined to learn about, things outside their home-base.

Experience over Material things

Every parent wants to give their children the best they can afford, but this doesn’t always mean stuff. Ultimately, they will get bored of the X-box or outgrow their mini-bike, but an incredible experience will stick with them for a lifetime. When their next show and tell features a sea shell from Mauritius, you’ll know it was worth it.

Don’t put off travel because you think your kids are stopping you, book your flights to Tel Aviv, your cruise to the Caribbean or take a road trip to Mexico. Pack the kids up and show them what’s really out there. They might grumble at the long hours in the car, but you’ll have an amazing family experience, and your kids will definitely thank you when they’re older.

Tips for Finding Hygienic Apartment Accommodation in Melbourne

August 9, 2017 By itravelnet.com

Tips for Finding Hygienic Apartment Accommodation in Melbourne

From businesspeople through to families, apartment accommodation in Melbourne is a popular choice for a wide range of travellers. Serviced apartments offer a large amount of space and feature kitchens, laundry facilities, living rooms to socialise in, and more. For many travellers, finding hygienic, clean and comfortable apartment accommodation in Melbourne is of the utmost importance. After all, the last thing you want to encounter after a long trip is an apartment that’s dirty – or even worse, an apartment that has a bed bug infestation. This article will highlight a number of things to look for when booking Melbourne apartments, and includes some handy tips to help ensure that the serviced apartment you choose meets your standards.

Conduct Research before Booking an Apartment

Doing some research before making a booking for a serviced apartment can certainly help you avoid disappointment by ensuring you don’t end up staying somewhere that doesn’t meet your needs. Checking reviews is a great way to gain an insight into what you can expect from a prospective apartment accommodation provider.

Spend some time looking at online reviews and see what other people who have previously stayed there have to say about the apartment. Make sure to keep an eye out for mentions of cleanliness. If you notice a few comments that are not too favourable in regards to hygiene and cleanliness, then this might be a good indicator that it might not be the best apartment. However, you should keep in mind that reviews that mention outdated decor and furnishings or an old bathroom are not the same thing as a lack of hygiene. A serviced apartment that isn’t brand new can still be perfectly clean and represent great value for money.

Check Rooms

Once you’ve booked a reputable serviced apartment and have arrived on the premises, it’s a good idea to inspect the apartment’s rooms and ensure that they meet your hygiene standards. Check for clean bed sheets, make sure the bathroom has been cleaned, and ensure that all floors have been recently vacuumed.
You can generally expect apartments to be as clean as you would expect a hotel room to be. If you discover anything that doesn’t meet your standards, you are well within your rights to demand that it be rectified. If you feel that the cleanliness of the apartment is well below what you expect, you might also consider asking to be moved to another vacant apartment if there is one available.

In Conclusion

Hygiene and cleanliness are obviously important when it comes to accommodation, so finding apartment accommodation that meets your cleanliness and hygiene standards should be high on your list of serviced apartment prerequisites. By thoroughly researching companies that provide apartment rentals and by conducting an inspection of the property in person when you arrive, you can be sure that your stay will be comfortable and healthy without the risk of any bed bugs biting.

4 Destinations in South America to Visit with Teenagers

August 9, 2017 By itravelnet.com

4 Destinations in South America to Visit with Teenagers

Travel is one of the best educations that a child of any age can receive. There’s little that can replace the experience of seeing something with their own eyes. When they travel they come into direct contact with unfamiliar cultures, people, landscapes, foods, plants, animals and climates. They sometimes have to communicate as best as they can in foreign languages and when they are given the chance to experience independent travel, they learn to deal with unforeseen changes to schedules.

Teenagers particularly benefit from the challenge of discovering environments that are different to the ones they are accustomed to. As they travel from place to place, their interests in learning about language, geography, culture and history begin to grow. If you plan on taking a trip to South America with teenagers in tow, some of the most inspiring destinations to take them to are as follows:

Angel Falls, Venezuela

Angel Falls, located in Canaima National Park, Venezuela’s second largest national park, is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall at 979 meters. Inaccessible by road, a trip to Angel Falls can only be achieved by taking a small plane from Ciudad Bolivar to a native village deep in the rainforest and then a white water rafting trip – around four hours – to the base of the waterfall, where travelers spend the night in hammocks in the middle of the forest. The climb up to the waterfall’s viewing platform is normally undertaken the following morning. The exploring nature of this trip as you white water raft your way to the falls is what really appeals to the adventurous teenage spirit, which is why it’s a trip you really don’t want to be making without an appropriate travel insurance plan in place.

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

If you want to introduce your teenagers to some of the most incredible flora and fauna on the planet, take them to The Galapagos Islands off of the western coast of Ecuador. An archipelago of volcanic islands, The Galapagos are home to an incredible array of endemic species. They were studied by Charles Darwin and form part of his theory of evolution. Teenagers who visit these islands don’t only get the opportunity to explore the beauty of our planet in the present, but they also receive an education in our planet’s biological history.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Apart from being a series of jaw-dropping architectural structures, this world famous site constructed by the Inca community is a gateway into South American history. A trip to Machu Picchu gives teenagers the opportunity to learn first-hand about Peru’s pre-colonial roots, customs and beliefs. It’s living proof of a culture that knew nothing of the Bible nor of the Catholic religion; a culture that had the ability to build incredibly high structures without the aid of heavy construction machinery, like the kind we employ today.

If you add the excitement of actually making the pilgrimage trek along the Inca Trail, camping for at least three nights en route, making exhausting climbs and moving through incredible countryside, this is perhaps one of the most thrilling destinations for teenagers to visit in South America.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

If your teenage children aren’t particularly lovers of the great outdoors, South America still comes up trumps with Argentina’s capital city. Brimming over with museums, galleries, theaters, street art and independent cinemas, young people with an interest in the arts must visit Buenos Aires at least once. Restaurants open and serve dinner until late – as Argentines have a custom of eating at around 10pm – and children are always welcome. The city’s parks are vast and refreshing, offering plenty of needed respite from the relentless movement and excitement that surrounds.

If you happen to be a meat-loving family, then Buenos Aires is, once more, an excellent place to visit in South America as you’re not likely to find a better steak served anywhere else on the continent… anywhere in the world, to be more precise. So if art, theater, football matches and food feature at the top of your teenager’s list of favorite things to do, you know where your next flight booking should be taking you.
