London - World
I went to Norwich today, in the east of England. It was most fortuitous that I arranged to go today, the day that the England cricket team paraded through central London in honour of regaining the Ashes. I'm all for parades, but this one would have been obscenely offensive to me, so a day out of the capital proved a wonderful tonic.
I remember reading about a sign that is about half an hours drive outside of New York City that says "Welcome to America" (if there isn't one there should be). A similar sign would be apt outside of London with "Welcome to England".
Indeed I am always struck with how English the rest of England is, if I may say such an absurd statement. When living in London you can forget you are in England. It's as if the land within the M25 is it's own island nation.
Of course there are all the trimmings there that make London English, like the royal red phone and post boxes, fish and chip shops and parochial national football supporters. It is such an international city though that London feels it belongs to the world rather than England.
