City of Joyce - Trieste

Trieste is situated in the North East corner of Italy. I knew very little about Trieste, as it seems most people do as well. I did know that James Joyce spent 11 years in exile from Ireland here.

Trieste is a beautiful city with its Adriatic waterfront, grand apartments and commercial buildings and, weather permitting, the Alps as a backdrop. All this and hardly any tourists. If you were to go into exile in a city in Europe, then I can think of no better place - no one would find you here.

Trieste was the principle port for the Habsburg Empire when it controlled these lands. So the city looks Austrian but it feels Italian. Here you find Vienese style cafes alongside Italian pizzarias.

The lack of crowds is more apparent if you have just come from Venice, two hours train ride west of Trieste.

Joyce's time in Trieste is honoured with a statue and a hotel named after him.

Comments:
Hi. I am Laura Doubles from Costa Rica. I am 42 years old, and I am married. This is my first time in this blog and I’m not sure about how much to write because I have visited some Blogs, and sometimes it is so boring… I only want to express some things of my vacation, because I have visited others Blogs and I have seen that people write about their experiences and I thought: Why not me? You will see: I am a professional woman I have twins of 7 years, Ivan and Marco. They are in school, with the North American system. So, we took advantage of the vacation time of the end of their course, to be able to go all together, I am a public relationist, and my husband is a commercial manager. That’s why our work environment is heavy enough. This makes that time with our boys sometimes is not so good. We wanted to do something different, and to take advantage of the recommendation we had of the Hotel Fiesta Resort in Puntarenas, here in Costa Rica.

I already had visited it once, while I attended for a Qualification Course, which was organized, in my old work (the hotel have a very accommodate conference rooms with good equipment). But it is not the same to go there to participate in a seminary than to go for resting and not to think about work… Something called my attention: that in the hotel was having special activities for all: for my children that spent an amusing time in the Kids Club, with very nice activities and extremely enabled personnel. My husband and I did kayak and others water sports, and we took popular dance classes, among other things. There were also activities for mature people. Definitively, it is great to go there, because we spent a very nice time, and we want to return as soon as we have a chance. I would like to receive comments from those who had gone there, and who want to share their experiences. Also, if you know some place with these characteristics, write please.
