Airbus thinking outside the cubicle

The Airbus A380 could soon have the option of being fitted out with male urinals. On long haul 747 flights there is always a long queue down the aisle at breakfast time, so this is a good idea for A380's that will eventually be carrying over 600 passengers.

With the space they save by using urinals they can then the water savings for showers.

Having a leak in Liege

Drunken men are going to take a leak in corners no matter where it is. So this church has installed an open urinal in this prominent corner.

The toilets of Greece

I once knew a plumber who went to Greece. I asked him how his trip was and he explained to me in great detail the mess that is the Greek toilet system. In Greece you are not allowed to put the toilet paper in the bowl. Instead you must put it in a waste basket that is usually next to the toilet.

According my my plumber mate, the toilets in Australia and other western countries have 4 inch sewerage pipes. In Greece the pipes are only 3 inches, so there is more chance of a blockage if the paper goes as well.

If I didn't hear this tale, I may have had a hard time guessing what some of these picture signs meant.

This system is now the custom in Greece, even if a toilet can withstand paper and poo.

Hi-tech toilets of Japan

Ahh, the fabled hi-tech toilets of Japan. I had heard much of these WC's, so I was delighted to finally see one.

To start off with the seat was heated. I'm not sure if this was a built in feature or due to the fact that I was hot seating after a portlier than normal Japanese man.

On the right hand side is a control panel with instructions in Japanese and Braille, but no English. With a possible risk of a hot jet of water splashing me before I was ready I pressed some of the buttons. Nothing happened, so I pressed all the buttons in different combinations, and still nothing happened. It appears that you need to be a commercial pilot or a Rhodes Scholar to operate these things. Either that or the toilet was broken.

It did flush though, saving myself and the queue of Japanese guys lots of blushes all round as I finally emerged from the cubicle.
