THE PORT ROYAL HOTEL
butehotel.com
The Isle of Bute in Scotland is the ideal destination to escape big city life and revitalize your spirit. Time has stood still and Bute has no modern developments of any kind, the buildings are either ancient farms and castles or sandstone villas built by Glasgow merchants 150 years ago. The island is traffic free although there is a good regular bus service, and an open-top tour bus circumnavigates four times a day in summer. The terrain is varied with small pasture fields, forest, deep lochs full of trout, pike and perch, highlands, and beaches empty except for grey seals (over 200.) Wild deer, wild goats, hares, basking sharks, porpoises, dolphins and a great variety of birdlife make this their home. There are castles, an historic Grand House, ancient chapels, Standing Stones and prehistoric sites to explore. Four golf-courses, two bowling greens and a Petanque pitch provide scope for a game or two. You may hike, bike, horse-ride, fish, sail or simply chill-out amidst truly spectacular scenery of mountains, seascapes, islands and forest. At Port Bannatyne, a small fishing village, a Russian family have bought the old seashore inn and now offer budget accommodation in four guestrooms, and superior food and drink in their now famous Russian Tavern. Beer is poured straight from the barrel, seafood is brought in live from the boats and the Russian dishes encompass the wild berries, salads, herbs and fungi that Babushkas collects from the wild. Reputedly in the top five restaurants in Scotland according to "TIME-OUT" (London.)
