Subject: Bruxelles Date: 01 September 2002

From: James Clark

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation."

Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)

As an Australian living in Ireland, I have noticed that Belgium gets a bad rap in Europe. Flat and boring they say. Flat certainly, and perhaps the association of Brussels being the home of the European Parliament and NATO give it its boring tag that usually goes with bureaucratic cities. What I knew about Brussels didn't help the cause either. I knew that it has what is often rated as Europes number one tourist disappointment, the Manekin Pis. It has the Atomium, a 50's Jetsons-esque ode to the future, and it also has Mini-Europe - a theme park that rips off all the famous sites of Europe. Any place that uses other places attractions to attract people sets the alarm bells ringing for me that there is not much going on here.

After my first day here though I have to say that Brussels rocks!

Greenwich Cafe My Judgement may have been slightly impaired by the fact that I was having a major vitamin D endorphine rush, induced by the 30 deg C day after coming from the perpetually overcast Dublin. Even factoring this variable in, Brussels has the best city square in Europe, excellent cafes and lots of interesting old grungy neighbourhoods.

I also just happened to be there when the grand place market square was transformed into a giant carpet made up of nearly one million flowers. This happens one weekend every two years.

I approve of Brussels...If only Canberra was this cool!
