6 Tips for Successful Wilderness Survival

6 Tips for Successful Wilderness Survival

Sometimes, unexpected events may happen and you end up in the wilderness alone. Even though the wilderness is not an ideal situation for you, you can survive and get back to safety if you are determined. Here are a few tips to help you survive in the wilderness.

Master your attitude

A survival situation is not the right time for you to panic. You will likely survive a difficult situation if you focus on maintaining a proactive and positive attitude. You need to develop a plan to help you survive. You should also identify the important things needed for survival, for example, shelter, warmth, water, and food.

Determination is what will separate a survivor from a non-survivor. When you maintain a realistic outlook and plan yourself diligently, you will be able to keep yourself in the best possible mental and physical state.

Take inventory

It is important that you keep everything that you have with you. This is because when your plans do not yield fruit, whatever you have can come in handy and could help save your life. You should never underestimate the potential of even the smallest item that you have because it could become your biggest asset when you get lost in the wilderness.

Build a shelter

You should get creative if you get lost in the wilderness or lose your trail during the Kentucky Derby. You need to build a shelter that will provide a warm covering and protection from the elements. If you are in mountainous or rocky terrain, you should look for overhands. If not, use leaves or limbs or anything else that can provide insulation. Pine needles are excellent for bedding because they blanket the ground in thick batches.

Get clean water

The only way for you to survive is to find clean and uncontaminated water. You can collect, store and drink rainwater. You can use a piece of clothing to collect up dew on plants and squeeze it into a container. Since plants also perspire just like humans, you can plant a moisture bag by tying a plastic bag around a leafy branch of a tree and water will collect over time. You can look for plants that indicate that water sources are close by, for example, cottonwood, cattails, and willows, and dig a deep seep hole until you get to the water.

Keep your stomach full

It can be quite difficult to find adequate food sources when in survival mode. This is because malnutrition will affect you mentally and physically and this will make you feel delirious, weak, and cranky. Familiarize yourself with edible plants and wild berries for future reference when in the wild. When in survival, you should avoid being picky and embrace anything, including leaves, fruits, eggs and bugs, but with caution.

Light a fire

You should learn the different ways of lighting fire when in the wilderness. This is because you will need fire to keep you warm, cook your food, signal for help, and provide protection from pesky bugs and predators. Some of the techniques that you should try to learn are fire plow, bow and drill, fire from ice, battery method, lens method, and a soda can and chocolate.

Horses usually have an excellent sense of direction; however, it is risky to turn all the directional decisions to your horse when you are lost. The path that your horse chooses towards home may not be easily negotiable and any rough terrains can make him choose a wrong path. Horses usually have a homing instinct; however, home may not be where you parked your trailer.
