Discover the beautiful island of Gran Canaria

October 30, 2012 By itravelnet.com

Spain has always been a traditional choice for tourists looking for sun and sea, with millions of visitors flocking to the Costa del Sol every year. Of course, people don’t just go to Spain for the beach, there is a wealth of historical and cultural riches to explore in this beautiful country as well amazing variations in the landscape.

However, if you’re looking for a Spanish destination that can offer you a bit of everything in an area that is easy to get around you may want to try holidaying in one of the Canary Islands. Located just off the coast of north-west Africa, the Canaries are a great place to go on holiday at any time of the year, as the climate is always warm there.

The four largest islands in the Canaries are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Each of the islands offers its own reasons to visit. If you’re a windsurfer, then Fuerteventura is the place to be; for volcanic national parks head to Tenerife or Lanzarote. Tenerife is the biggest island in the Canaries, and is the most visited, but holidays to Gran Canaria can be great for people looking for a little more space to themselves, though there is plenty going on if you want to find things to do.

Of course, like all the other Canary islands, Gran Canaria has some amazing beaches and its capital city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has plenty of interesting places to visit. It’s a good idea to hire a car so that you can make the most of your time in Gran Canaria and have the freedom to explore the whole island.

One of the most interesting trips to do on Gran Canaria is to visit the Dunes of Maspalomas – a 4.5 square kilometre sand desert. This is an amazing natural landscape to experience. To discover some of the history of Gran Canaria, make time to visit Mundo Aborigen – a replica of an ancient village that can be found on the road to Fataga, near Playa del Inglés. Here you can find out about how people used to live in the Canaries, their social make-up and their beliefs about religion and burial.

There won’t be enough time to see everything that Gran Canaria has to offer if you’re only there for a week or two, but you can always go back for more.
