How to Start Writing a Travel Journal

June 15, 2017 By itravelnet.com

How to Start Writing a Travel Journal

Are you fond of traveling? Do you want to put that wander lust into papers? It’s not as hard as you think. Writing might not be your cup of tea, but still maintaining a travel journal is essential, especially if you’re a globe-trotter. You might go to awesome places, meet new people, indulge in different cultures, and even try out different cuisines; don’t you think your experience is worth sharing? Yes, it obviously is.

Imagine a friend asking you to help them with planning their trip to a place you have already been to. They might ask you, “write my paper buddy, the itinerary,” and in such cases you must be ready with your list of places to visit in the city, cuisines and restaurants to try out, and more. Having a travel journal will help you to quickly flip through a few pages and come up some exciting plans for helping out in their journey.

The first step toward writing a travelogue is finding a good source, like a diary or a portable electronic device. If you’re planning to go with traditional ways of writing a diary, then consider buying an amazing customized notebook. This might seem a bit superficial, but the reality is if you start scribbling in a cheap old notebook, you’ll eventually feel bad taking it out, or might even lose it along the way. On the other hand, if you invest in a good book, you’ll naturally have the urge to keep it safe because you invested on it. A new travelogue or a diary will also encourage you to write more, and you’ll end up putting a lot of things in it.

You can also focus on customizing your travel diary. There are a lot of printing outlets that let customers customize their journal covers, pages, listings, and more. You can visit a nearby printing outlet and choose your desired design, paper, and cover for a personalized travel journal. Sometimes, the place or city you visit will have a lot of vendors selling diaries or travel journals. You can also buy one from them and that will also act as a reminder of where you might have purchased it.

If you’re planning to take an electronic device, like an iPad, tablet, or a laptop on your journey, remember to pick up the chargers too. Many modern travelers who come with their tablets struggle with battery problems and let it ruin their spirit of traveling. Remember to take the necessary charger, portable batteries, device covers, and accessories while packing your tablet. It’s always better to stick with a physical diary or a journal because that’s easy to maintain, and writing with your bare hands will give you a sense of satisfaction.

When you have packed your diary and started on the journey, don’t pull out the journal and jot down everything you see. Just because it’s happening on your journey or in an unknown city doesn’t necessarily make it interesting. Understand your requirements. If you’re traveling to experience the culture of a different place, fill your journal accordingly. If you’re planning to travel for peace of mind, jot down things that motivated you during the course of your journey.

If you find something interesting worth sharing with friends or have something on your mind, write it down in the diary. You might also come across interesting personalities during your travels. They might impress you, motivate you, and make you laugh, or even give you a bad experience. If you become friends with anyone in the new city worth keeping in touch, write about them and their contact information on your diary. You can also include how you traveled from one location to another, distance covered, best mode of transport, and other such informative details.

Don’t just keep on filling the diary with words; add interesting tidbits to it. Make a quick sketch of the scenery, let the kid traveling next to you play hangman with you in the diary, add stickers and stamps collected from the places you visited, and other such fun activities. This will make your travel journal very interesting and also motivate you to travel more.
