The arrival of one of the world’s biggest cruise ships in Marmaris in early May saw column inches dedicated to the story. The Aida Diva, the latest addition to the Aida Cruises stable of ships, certainly makes an impression; extending over 250 metres from bow to stern. Comprising nearly seventy thousand tons too, it is an impressive sight.
The near 2,000 passengers on board would likely have welcomed their shore leave to Marmaris but it is unlikely that many would have experienced this fine Turkish city to its fullest extent. It is certainly one that deserves to be uncovered in more than a few hours too.
One highlight that any holiday maker to Marmaris should take in is the Grand Bazaar, also known as the Carsi Market.
As with many other Turkish Bazaars and markets, the smells, colours, sounds and sights here are a pleasant invasion of the senses. What makes the offering at Marmaris particularly great is its location, right at the centre of things and within easy reach of the harbour and all hotels.
Typically Turkish carpets and jewellery are offered here, but you will need a little brutish resilience with your haggling to get the very best from it. Souvenirs are also in good supply of course, but it is best to go for the handmade ones, ideally those that you can see being made.
The bazaar is also good for food. Heading for the stalls around which the locals seem to be gathering is always a sensible way to choose where to start but, as confidence grows, heading out to the lesser populated stands can reveal some exciting new tastes.
For a more settled way to eat, Marmaris also has some great restaurants. Offering great views as well as great food, the Ney Restaurant is a little gem to find for example.
The Linman restaurant too is a treat waiting to be discovered. Located in the bazaar, it can get busy though. Having to wait a while is well worth it however, with the catch of the day, often sea bass, always a winner.
Exploring this city is so rewarding too, and a great way to work up an appetite. Heading for the castle is certainly time well spent. With the city’s museum located here, the captivating history of the region is really brought to life.
