Retrace the steps of The Hobbit in New Zealand

December 19, 2012 By itravelnet.com

With the phenomenal success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the recent release of the first of three Hobbit movies New Zealand is the place to head for if you are a die-hard Hobbit fan and want to follow in the footsteps of Bilbo Baggins on a Hobbit travel tour.

In Matamata you can find Hobbiton has been created complete with Hobbit holes and the special Hobbit tours include costumed characters and a meal at the famous Green Dragon Inn.

If you travel to the remote Mount Potto high country station you can see how Mount Sunday was transformed into Endoras for the Lord of the Rings films. This was the capital of the place where the Rohans lived in the trilogy.

Several travel companies now specialise in Lord of the Rings and Hobbit travel tours to different film locations in and around Wellington where a lot of the Lord of the Rings films were shot. You can take photographs at the places you saw in the film and make your favorite characters come alive.

You can visit Hobbiton Woods, Isengard, Isen Fords, Rivendell and Minas Tirinth plus more. A full-day tour would take in at least nine different locations.

The main Hobbit and Lord of the Rings locations in New Zealand are Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and those places should all be on your list if you want the ultimate Hobbit travel experience. One of the most magical places becomes reality when you go on a day tour from Auckland.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are within easy reach of the city and to make this visit even more exciting you can take a boat ride to the Glowworm Grotto and see thousands of twinkling lights coming from the glow worms.

If money is no object you can travel by helicopter from Wellington visiting Middle Earth, Rivendell, Auduin River and Buckland Forest which is where the hobbits were forced to hide to escape from the Black Rider. On this trip you travel in groups of four with a knowledgeable guide who points out the various locations from the air before you land to explore and take photographs.

As the popularity of the Hobbit grows with the release of The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey, more and more travel companies are running location tours so you will be able to shop around to get the best deals.
