Sydney through different lenses: how locals, tourists and artists see the harbour

September 4, 2025 By itravelnet.com

Golden hour skyline of Sydney with Opera House and Harbour Bridge

Last Wednesday, I saw three people standing at the same spot near Circular Quay Wharf. A suited-up business man checking his watch and mentally calculating ferry times, a European backpacker with a slacked jaw, squinting through her cameras and an elderly woman sketching the play of the clouds and water in front of her. Same place, some moment, yet three different worlds.

It got me thinking, Sydney is that place — a democratic beauty, but at the same time, personal. It’s iconic, yet everyone who looks at it sees something different – something that reflects who they are or why they’re here.

Through the Eyes of a Local

For us Sydneysiders, the harbour is more backyard than postcard. It’s where my friend Sarah goes for her daily power-walk, not even glancing at the Opera House, eyes instead on the water gauging its conditions for her swim later. My ritual of strolling around Circular Quay on a weekend arvo, grabbing some take-away to eat at a nearby park, fending off the sneaky seagulls trying to steal it from my hand — something I hold dear to myself. And most of the time, I’m accompanied by families doing their own ritual of having a barbie picnic by the water, kids playing footie and couples carving out their own moments. To celebrate, it’s an obvious choice to hop on a Sydney Harbour dinner cruise — making memories, surrounded by the iconic yet obvious million-dollar views.

People always ask me ‘Don’t you get tired of the view?’. Well, for starters, it’s not always the same. Some mornings I notice the water is mirror-flat, and on others, its murky emerald. Now that I think about it, it fits the ‘Emerald City’ title of Sydney. We know the best swimming spot is at hidden coves and bays like Balmain and Store Beach, and the wharf in Circular Quay that offers the best brew. We’re also intuitive enough to avoid the Quay during cruise ship days. For us, it’s not just scenic, it’s stitched into our everyday life in little, ordinary ways that makes it ours.

Lens of a tourist

Then, there’s the tourist experience — pure, unadulterated wonder. I still get kicks from watching first-timers turn the corner from the Circular Quay station and stop dead in their tracks. Their phones come out almost in an instant, but you can tell their minds are still catching up on what the eyes are seeing. My own first time? Byakuya, my friend, uttered ‘I’ve only seen it in movies, but this…’. I was instantly plotting; the Opera House tour, climbing the Harbour Bridge and wrapping it up with a dinner cruise. Safe to say, that’s the ‘top 3’  for most first-timers wanting to experience the harbour.

For them, it’s a collection of bucket-list experiences. They want the perfect shots, the Instagrammable moments, stories to take home. And honestly, there’s something infectious about their unbridled enthusiasm. It’s a reminder for us locals to look up from the screens and actually appreciate the masterpiece we walk by every other day.

Vision of an artist

Then, we have the artists, for whom Sydney Harbour is less a backdrop and more a giant canvas. Painters, photographers, musicians they all find a unique Sydney hidden in the folds of the harbour. Where I would only see a blue stretch of water, they see light ricocheting off the skyscrapers, shadows under the Bridge, colours turning gold at sunset and inky black at night. Stand in any art gallery at The Rocks and you can discover different interpretations of the harbour. Brett Whiteley’s swirling harbour paintings are prime examples.

Even the annual Vivid Sydney festival is a giant artistic love letter to the harbour, transforming it into a technicolour wonderland. Musicians also claim Sydney Harbour as their stage — opera echoing from the forecourt, even buskers at Circular Quay soundtracking the daily flow of ferries.

The perspective of all (in me)

As for me, after walking, writing, sipping wine by the water, I’ve become a bit of a mashup. There are days where I pass by the harbour without even peeking at the postcard frame, but there are also times when I’m awestruck by the sheer regalness of the Harbour Bridge, or the immaculate design of the sails of the Opera House. And sometimes, the artist in me loves chasing the perfect harbour shot when the skies flare up in orange at golden hour!

The harbour holds all these perspectives simultaneously. Perhaps, that’s the beauty of Sydney Harbour; there’s room for everyone’s wonder here!
