About Low Cost Airlines
|
In these times where scores of major airlines have folded, merged or are the brink of bankruptcy, the low cost airlines have been florishing. Low cost airlines, AKA budget, low-price, discount or no frills airlines have been expanding rapidly and making profits. No where more so than in Europe. Once seen as a dodgy air travel option, they have been embraced across the continent, and there is a carrier now based in most western European countries. What is a low cost airline? A low cost airline has many features that differentiate it from the traditional carriers. These features include: (telephone sales are discouraged by higher prices and limited service) Not all low cost airlines have these features, and not all airlines that have some of these features are low cost airlines. For example, Virgin Express are a low cost airline, but you still get complimentary coffee and inflight magazine, and they are based at Brussels primary airport. On the other hand, the Irish flag flyer Aer Lingus has been promoting itself as a low cost carrier, with € 8 (ex tax) one way fares from Dublin to London. They are still very much though a traditional state carrier. Such fares are usually only available when the traditional airline has competition on the same route from a low cost flyer. Aer Lingus certainly have competition in the form of Ryan Air, who are the text book example of no frills airlines. They lead the way when it comes to promotions. They have had many free flight sales (plus tax), and not just on a few seats, but half a million across the whole network. I can vouch for this as I have availed myself of these offers on a number of occasions. Patience and timing is all that is required when booking these flights, as such sales almost always cause the website to overload with all of the hits that it gets. |
