A guide to the world’s most overlooked ski destinations

September 22, 2011 By itravelnet.com

Just hearing the words ‘The Alps’ conjures up breathtaking images of glimmering ski slopes, clear skies and perfect, powdery snow, but have you considered venturing off piste, snapping up one of the many tempting late ski deals and trying out a new resort for your ski holiday?

When it comes to heading off on a ski trip, Brits tend to stay close to home, with France, Austria and Switzerland the most popular destinations for British skiers. These European gems have attracted skiers from all over the world for many years now, but some unexpected resorts are emerging and tourists now have a vast choice of ski holiday destinations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons during several years of unrest in the 90s; however, as the country has become more stable in recent times, it has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists, especially those looking to grab a bargain ski break. Tripadvisor figures confirm a significant increase in the number of people visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina to make the most of the chilly climes and save money on their annual ski holiday. Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1984 and all the facilities you could ever wish for are there to enjoy.

Poland has also become more prominent in the ski holiday market and provides a great option for British tourists too, as flights from the UK are short, inexpensive and frequent. Poland is an ideal choice for tourists on a budget as ski and snowboarding holidays are considerably cheaper than at other more established European resorts. Just a few hours from the UK, Slovenia is also emerging as an excellent ski holiday location; the unspoilt landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for a family holiday, couple’s retreat or group trip.

China is a well-known tourist destination, but you may never have realised that it also has a booming ski tourism industry. The country that is synonymous with the Great Wall, bustling cities and amazing food also has some excellent ski resorts, making it a fantastic holiday destination. You can combine your ski holiday with a sightseeing tour or simply take advantage of what the Chinese slopes have to offer.

Australia and New Zealand are popular destinations for British tourists, but many head down under to see the sights, soak up the rays and experience the culture, rather than heading off on a winter sports adventure. Australia is most famous for its landscapes, wildlife and outdoor culture, but it also has some lively ski resorts. If you are put off by the long-haul flight, why not combine your ski holiday with travelling around other parts of the country, ticking off the list of ‘must-see’ attractions, indulging in real Australian culture and enjoying the trip of a lifetime.

New Zealand is a long way away but the mammoth journey is well worth it, especially for those who love an adrenalin rush. New Zealand offers everything a sports fan could ever wish for, including some incredible ski and snowboard slopes. The resorts are bustling by day and night and you can curl up in one of the many comfy ski chalets, wind down with a drink and take in the incredible views after a hard day on the piste.

Skiing is exhilarating and great fun and if you’re looking for an adventure holiday, it is the perfect choice. If you do decide to pack your bags and hit the slopes, why not consider a less well-known destination and sample a new and exciting ski holiday experience? Some of the most bewildering and beautiful places in the world are awaiting you, so what are you waiting for?
