Breaking into the Travel Industry

April 20, 2020 By itravelnet.com

Breaking into the Travel Industry

Working in the travel industry is rewarding and exciting. You may want to work in the industry for the perks, the excitement, or other reasons, but you should understand that others feel the same way. To build the career you want, you will need to build a path that allows you to stand out as you continue to move up the ladder. Working in the travel industry can be exciting and rewarding, but like any industry, it is a job, with good points and bad points. It is important to have realistic expectations when entering this interesting field.

Target Your Education

Whether you are straight out of high school or you are already working, investing in your education is a great way to become employed in the field of your dreams. Student loans are very affordable, and allow you to focus on gaining the skills you need to invest in yourself and become successful in a travel career. Whether you are interested in marketing, business development, logistics, or some other specialty, earning a degree shows that you can learn and follow through, and puts you in a great position to find employment in your dream career.

Seek Out a Specialty

Consider what you are doing in your current job and think of ways that those duties translate to the travel industry. Travel may be different from other businesses, but building a strong niche in an area such as marketing or business analysis while you are working outside of the industry allows you to use those skills to break in. Even if the skills you use at your current job don’t line up with your dream job in the travel industry, they can provide a foot in the door. Once there, it is easier to pivot to the job you want.

Don’t Be Afraid to Interview

It can be tempting to hold off applying for your dream job because you don’t feel qualified yet. The problem with this sort of thinking is that you may find that you never feel qualified. Think of a job listing as a wish list rather than a list of must have qualifications. If you meet some of the requirements on the list, submit your application. The worst that happens is that you don’t hear back. Going through the interview process is a skill like any other. Consider getting called in for interviews for jobs you don’t get is actually a learning experience, believe it or not. Experience with the interview process will come in handy when your dream job opens up and your qualifications meet the company’s expectations.

Make Yourself Valuable

Don’t become complacent once you find a job in your chosen field. Continue to participate in training, work to stay on the leading edge of new technology, and become the go-to person for information as a subject matter expert. It is important to continue to invest in your career. Becoming the person that others count on pays dividends when your organization faces change or difficulties in the economy affect your company.
