How to Carry on With Your Language Lessons on Vacation

October 31, 2012 By itravelnet.com

If you are currently studying a second language then going abroad on vacation is a wonderful way of carrying on learning. Of course, this will only help you if you go about things the right way, so let’s check out a few tips.

Choose the Destination Wisely

It seems pretty obvious that you will want to choose a destination where the language you are learning is spoken. However, you might have more than place to pick from. For example, if you are learning Spanish you could pick from Spain as well as most of the countries in Latin America and even one in Africa. Some of the accents might be easier for you to understand than other and this is definitely one of the points you need to investigate and think about.

Talk to People

Once you get across there is won’t do you much good to stay in your hotel room and not talk to people. You should get out and about as much as possible. As you speak the local language you can also get off the beaten track and explore places which other tourists don’t usually get to and where there won’t be many restaurant menus in English or hotel receptionists who speak it either.

Don’t Get Frustrated or Lose Confidence

One of the most difficult parts of learning a new language is that it can be very frustrating when you make a mistake or forget a word. If this is the first time you have used the tongue in a natural setting then it could be easy for you to lose confidence in your ability. However, you have to be strong and try to stay positive even if it is more difficult than you had at first expected it to be. You will get there in the end if you keep trying.

Practice Before You Go

Finally, to make the most of your trip abroad you should practice as much as you can before you go. The good news here is that it is now easy to get hold of a native speaking teacher in North America. This means that if you want if you want German lessons, New York is a fine place to practice with someone who knows exactly what you can expect to find in Germany. The same applies with many other languages too. For example, in their French classes, Dallas residents can build up the confidence they need to enjoy their trip to France even more.
