How To Prepare Your House Before A Long Trip

October 9, 2017 By itravelnet.com

How To Prepare Your House Before A Long Trip

There are many things you need to think about before you leave your house for a long trip. Criminals love to target houses that are vacant when people are out of town because it reduces the chances that they are going to get caught. So any indication that you leave that your home is unoccupied for a lengthy period of time may as well be a welcome sign to burglars. A lot of people don’t realize that burglars are clever enough to look for things that you may not think are obvious signs that you aren’t at home at the moment.

For example, if you allow your garden to become overgrown or die while you are away this is a clear indicator that you probably aren’t home. Most people with gardens care enough about them that they wouldn’t allow them to be neglected unless of course, they are away from home. So make sure you have a neighbor or friend keep an eye on your lawn and garden while you are away. If you have a regular lawn maintenance schedule – stick to it! Even if that means paying your lawn care service in advance for the time that you’ll be away from your home. If that sounds unappealing to you, there are plenty of services out there like LawnStarter that allow you to monitor your service via an app, so it’s ideal for the road.

What other things do you need to concern yourself with when you are planning to be away from home for a long period of time? Well you need to take steps to make it look like your home is occupied. One easy step to take is to have timers put in so that your lights turn on and off which makes it look like someone is in the house. You also need to either contact the post office and have them hold your mail, or have a neighbor collect it for you. Nothing screams out to burglars that someone isn’t home quite like a pile of mail sticking out of your mailbox.

In an ideal world you know a friend or family member that you trust that you can have stay in your home while you are away. A house sitter really is the best deterrent from burglars looking for a vacant home. You also need to make sure that all of your doors and windows are secure. Will a secured door or window keep out a determined burglar? No, but if you have one that is open then once again you are basically inviting a burglar to come on in and help themselves to your property.

It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where you have to be worried about having burglars break into your home while you are away on a trip. But this is the world that we live in. If you want to keep burglars out of your home what you need to do is make your home as unappealing of a target as possible. Nothing will keep a burglar that is hell bent on getting into your home from breaking in. But if you take steps to make it look as if someone is in your home, and other security measures, it can make your home look like an unappealing target. Burglars aren’t looking for a challenge, they want an easy score. So when you make your house look like it’s anything but an easy score you are increasing the odds of keeping the bad guys away.
